Restaurant Mason features in Bupa's "Best in Fine Dining: Sydney vs Melbourne" article

Firmly established in the culinary scene of Newcastle, Restaurant Mason is now making a splash in big-sister city Sydney’s dining scene too. In only five short years, our vision for Restaurant Mason has resulted in much critical acclaim. Most recently we featured in an article by Bupa Travel Insurance profiling the best restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne.

Mason provides the perfect mix of gourmet gastronomy with straight-forward elegance. A popular with locals and a gem for tourists who want to try something beyond the borders of Sydney, come and experience for yourself what the critics are raving about in our light-filled premises.

As Bupa Travel Insurance writes, ‘The elegant space has light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows and the menu matches the décor; Australia’s finest produce speaks for itself through the classic flavours’.

Located on Hunter Street under the bustling Essington Apartments, Restaurant Mason’s location has long been a culinary destination. However, its most recent incarnation was brought to life by husband and wife team Chris and Ami Thornton in November 2011, as they completely reimagined the space to better fit a vision of excellence.

This redesign meant a full revamp of former restaurant space to reflect a more casual, approachable dining style. Drawing inspiration from their success in London, the idea was to make the entire concept of the Mason smarter. A smarter restaurant layout made the space more conducive to enjoying your meal while taking in the unique Newcastle vibe, as featured in ‘Best in Fine Dining: Sydney vs Melbourne’.

The smart philosophy of the Mason comes into play with the fresh, modern menu. Part of what distinguishes this restaurant is the true dedication to providing unique menu selections that remain firmly focused on locally sourced ingredients; you’ll delight in thoughtfully prepared Mandagery Creek venison and Macleay Valley suckling pig dishes.

And what better way to enjoy your meal than to compliment it with the finest selections of hand-picked wines? Restaurant Mason features wines from across Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Frequenters to the bistro will tell you there is nothing like a glass of Australia’s finest to wash down a serving of Mason’s slow-cooked goat or five-spiced glazed duck; be sure to ask your wait staff for recommendations to match your choices.

And of course, as Bupa writes, ‘A mouth-watering cheese selection rounds off the elegant affair.’

With several awards and distinctions already under our belt, Restaurant Mason is helping usher in a foodie renaissance in the Newcastle culinary scene.
